Sindre Solem (Nekromantheon, Obliteration)

Next up is Sindre Solem; Bassist/vocalist for the Norwegian thrash band Nekromantheon and Guitarist/vocalist for death metallers, Obliteration.

Obliteration was formed in 2001 in Kolbotn, Norway. Recording their first demo in 2004, and their debut ep 'Total fucking obliteration' the following year. The band then went on to release their first lp, 'Perpetual decay' on Tyrant Syndicate records in 2007; followed by the infamous 'Nekropsalms' record.
Obliteration successfully evokes the nostalgic greatness of the classic death metal sound, while manifesting their own style and encompassing a wide range of influences.
Their next album is to be recorded next year, and bodes to be an excellent continuation of their discography while further developing their unique death metal sound.

Nekromantheon began in 2005, releasing their first record; an ep titled, 'We're rotting' in 2007. They then appeared on the Speed and spikes Volume III split alongside Abigail, followed by their first lp, 'Divinity of death' and a split with fellow Norwegian band, Audiopain.
Earlier this year they released their second full length record, 'Rise, vulcan spectre' on Indie recordings.
Nekromantheon are representative of everything that makes great thrash metal, violent frenetic riffing accompanied by a percussive maelstrom and hauntingly aggressive vocals; synonymous with the great sound of bands such as Destruction, Kreator, Merciless, Sodom and Whiplash.

Questions with Sindre

How did you decide which songs/bands to add to the compilation? Are many of the bands recent discoveries?

I just took bands/tracks that I really love basically. I tried to take mostly obscure bands that deserve more attention, but more known bands like Hawkwind, Urfaust, Christian death, Samson, Love etc also made it on, mainly because they rock.
Yeah, a few are recent discoveries, like Dark Sonority, Randy and Astaroth, while some have been with me for many years..

Would you say that the wide range of music you listen to in some way influences your writing with Obliteration and Nekromantheon?

Yes, most definitively. I think that listening and taking an interest in other musical genres that the ones we operate in gives us a fresh angle and some sort of an edge. It makes you see stuff from a different point of view, maybe. I can't help to think that if a death metal band only were listening to cannibal corpse, Obituary, Deicide and Death, they would be the most boring band on the planet. I know for a fact that the many of the classical bands we're being compared to did not only listen to extreme metal, so why should I? But the most important thing is that I really enjoy myself when listening to other styles of music, and after listening to other, softer genres for a while metal feels much more fresh, evil, raw and exciting when I return to it.

Which records have you been spinning most lately? And are there any bands you've discovered which you'd like to recommend?

A lot of different stuff. Well actually, I have been very busy at school so my LP's have not gotten all the attention they deserve lately, but I'm working hard to catch up. Right now I'm listening to Kebekajse - Rese mot okänt mål. Great old Swedish prog-rock, which my mate Scott from Maim/Morbus Chron tipped me about when I was in Stockholm last weekend. They rule. Darkthrone - total death, Sir Lord Baltimore - Kingdom come, Regulations - to be me and Repugnat - Hecatomb have been spinned a lot lately, and I would like to recommend Pig Eyes, Dead Lord, Ranger, Mare, Vemod, Tusmørke, Mion's Hill and Gouge. Oh, the new Okkultokrati album fucking rules as well..

It seems Nekromantheon has played quite a few gigs over the past few months, including several outside of Norway. Have you had many invitations to play, or has this been something you've organised yourselves?

A little of both, some were invites, some were booked buy us or our booking agent, some were festivals etc. A good mix.

How do you discover new bands? Do you often trade records/tapes?

This differ a lot, but most of my new discoveries are tips from different friends and contacts, some through the world wide web, through different mixtapes and podcasts like this one I made for you guys, some through browsing in record stores or web-distro's. The best tips have been from likeminded friends and acquaintances and so forth. There are no rules, great music is all around.

Are there any styles of music outside of Rock, Metal or punk that you enjoy?

Well, those are the styles I'm most into, but I also have periods were I listen to god hip-hop, soul, house/techno, some Jazz etc. But it's mostly music that resides somewhere inside in confines of the term Rock.

What's next for Obliteration and Nekromantheon?

The new Obliteration album is just around the corner. We are gonna record early next year, I think. Very excited about this album, it will be sick, and quite different than the last one, NEKROPSALMS. Much darker, faster and colder. When it's out we'll hit the live - circuit like never before. With Nekromantheon we are gonna do a few more shows until the Obliteration record gets released, but I think 2013 will be a somewhat quiet year for Nekro, compared to 2012. Our drummer Kick also play in AUDIOPAIN, and they have a new album around the bend also. But if we get cool offers to do shows with good bands, we probably are gonna do our best to find time to do them..

Many thanks to Sindre for taking the time to produce this compilation and answer my questions
